Nigeria / Lake Chad Basin insurgency (Boko Haram, ISWAP)
Nigerian and neighbouring forces fight Boko Haram (JAS) and Islamic State West Africa Province around Lake Chad and Borno State. Deaths in the Lake Chad Basin rose about 60% in the year to mid-2026. Since May 2026 US forces have joined Nigerian operations, killing senior ISWAP leader Abu Bilal al-Minuki, but attacks on army bases continue.
