Central Sahel insurgencies (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger)
Military governments in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, backed by Russia's Africa Corps, fight al-Qaeda-linked JNIM and Islamic State Sahel. In April 2026 JNIM and the Tuareg-led FLA launched coordinated attacks across Mali, killing the defence minister and retaking Kidal. JNIM keeps a fuel blockade on Bamako and inflicted heavy army losses at Dioura in September 2026.
